We need models. We need those who demonstrate integrity. We need those who stand against evil and promote what’s good.
In the gospel of John we have a model. Unlike today’s pop icons, He does not obsess about being in fashion. Instead, He concerns Himself with serving the needs of others. Including you.
While talking to Jewish religious leaders, Jesus explained the reason why He was different from the thief. And who is Jesus? Let’s hear what He says.
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come so that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not a shepherd and does not own sheep, sees the wolf coming and abandons the sheep and runs away. So the wolf attacks the sheep and scatters them. (John 10:10-12 NET)
The phrase “good shepherd” can communicate the meaning of “model shepherd.” Jesus wasn’t just another good man among many others. He was the ultimate image of a true shepherd.
The Model Shepherd laid down His life for us on the cross (John 19:1-42 NET). The Model Shepherd does not abandon us (John 14:15-18 NET). The Model Shepherd protects us against the evil one (2 Thess 3:1-5).
That is a Model worth living for.
